Supporting International Doctoral Talent through Service Innovation: YU's Pre-Defense at JAIST
On June 11, 2025, YU Zhenranyi conducted her preliminary doctoral defense at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST). Her dissertation, titled “Designing a Career Service Mechanism to Support Career Diversification of International Doctoral Students in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Japan,” presents a theoretically grounded and practically relevant response to critical challenges in international doctoral education.
The study focuses on the struggles many students face, including cruel optimism toward academic careers, difficulties in applying transferable skills in cross-cultural settings, and the lack of emotionally and contextually sensitive support. To address these, YU proposes a three-part framework combining emotional support, skill reframing, and AI-enabled career guidance.
Her research comprises three qualitative investigations, drawing on in-depth interviews with current and former doctoral students. It identifies psychological and institutional barriers while exploring the role of conversational AI in personalized support design.
This work makes a timely and original contribution to the field of service science and offers actionable insights for policy makers and institutions aiming to build inclusive, future-oriented career development services for international doctoral talent. She successfully passed her pre-defense.
