M. Belal博士,そして私,白肌邦生との共著論文「Co-creative R&D process with an influencer: A case study of a stationery manufacturer」として,国際学術誌『Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market and Complexity』に掲載されました。

It Is Never Too Late to Learn: Transforming a Wealth of Professional Experience into Doctoral Research—and Sharing It with the World

“Experience accumulated over many years can be transformed into new knowledge through research.” One of our doctoral students has powerfully demonstrated the truth of this idea.

After building up a wealth of professional experience, he embarked on a doctoral program and developed questions rooted in his practical experience into rigorous academic research. This journey involved reviewing previous studies, refining research questions, conducting interviews with corporate professionals, analyzing a substantial volume of data, and presenting the findings in both Japanese and English. Although the path was by no means easy, his persistent efforts culminated in the completion of a doctoral dissertation.

The central theme of his research is co-creation between companies and influencers.

Influencers are commonly understood as people who introduce products on social media and communicate information to large audiences. This study, however, focuses on a role that goes far beyond promotion. Influencers with genuine expertise can deeply understand what users feel and need. Drawing on their professional knowledge and practical experience, they can contribute directly to the development of new products and services.

The study examines the development of “Art Crayon” by Pentel Co., Ltd., a Japanese manufacturer of stationery and art materials. The product emerged through the combination of Pentel’s technical expertise in materials and manufacturing with the knowledge and artistic sensibility of Mr. A, a painter and popular art educator on YouTube.

The analysis reveals that the influencer served as a “knowledge translator” between the company and its customers. The company possessed the technical expertise required to manufacture the product. The influencer, meanwhile, contributed knowledge that was more difficult to obtain from within the company—such as how people actually use the product, what users feel while creating art, and what makes artistic expression enjoyable.

By bringing these different forms of knowledge together, the collaboration created more than a new product. It generated a new experiential value: enabling adults to rediscover the joy of drawing freely.

The academic significance of this research lies in its understanding of open innovation not merely as an exchange of technologies and ideas, but as a process that connects different forms of knowledge, experience, and sensibility. It offers a concrete response to an important question: With whom—and through what kind of relationship—should companies collaborate if they wish to create value that resonates with people’s experiences and emotions, rather than simply improving product performance?

The results of this research have reached beyond the doctoral dissertation. A paper co-authored by Hisanobu Nakamura, H. M. Belal, and Kunio Shirahada, entitled “Co-creative R&D process with an influencer: A case study of a stationery manufacturer,” was accepted for publication in the international journal *Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity*. Naturally, the study also raises questions for future research. Further investigation is needed to determine whether the findings apply to other companies and industries and how co-creation involving multiple influencers might be organized. These remaining questions do not diminish the value of the study. Rather, they provide important starting points for its future development.

What is particularly inspiring is the determination to move beyond established professional experience, engage with new theories and research methods, conduct empirical investigations, and face the demanding process of writing and revising an academic paper in English. A wealth of experience enables a researcher to recognize issues that others may overlook. At the same time, transforming experience into academic knowledge requires a willingness to question one’s assumptions and to continue thinking on the basis of theory and evidence. This doctoral research successfully brings these two qualities together.

Doctoral education is not limited to one particular stage of life. It can provide a place where accumulated experience is transformed into knowledge that can be shared with society and passed on to future generations. The opportunity to begin learning anew and to connect with the world through research remains open at every stage of life. This achievement reminds us of the profound meaning of lifelong learning.
