I spoke at a seminar on knowledge management in the age of AI as one of the presenters on July 16, 2026.

What Kind of Human Intelligence Do Researchers Need in the Age of Generative AI?

I recently gave a talk entitled “Research, Innovation, and Human Wisdom: Reflections toward a Post-Growth Era.”

The talk began with the concept of **post-growth**, which has been attracting increasing academic attention, particularly in Europe. Post-growth does not simply mean rejecting economic growth. Rather, it asks whether GDP growth should remain the primary goal of society, and invites us to reconsider prosperity in terms of sustainability, human well-being, and the quality of life.

One of the key issues in this discussion is our capacity to imagine and shape the future.

What matters is not only improving techniques for predicting the future, but also developing our capacity for **anticipation**: the ability to consider what kind of future we want, what we value, and how our actions today can contribute to creating that future.

This question is becoming even more important with the rapid development of generative AI.

AI can certainly make research faster. It can search literature, analyze data, suggest hypotheses, write code, and generate text. But this leads to a more fundamental question:

**Does AI make research wiser, or does it simply make research faster?**

The philosopher of science Nicholas Maxwell has long argued that academia should not focus solely on acquiring knowledge. Instead, intellectual priority should be given to discovering possible solutions to the problems of human living. Drawing on this perspective, I have been considering the importance of **wisdom**: not only the capacity to generate knowledge, but also the capacity to judge what knowledge is valuable, what purposes research should serve, and what kind of future we should pursue.

This idea is also connected to our educational activities at JAIST. We have been developing researcher education based on **Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)**. Researchers need more than specialized knowledge and analytical skills. They also need the ability to reflect on the possible social consequences of their research, engage with people who hold different values, and, when necessary, reconsider the direction of their research itself.

At the end of the talk, I referred to Douglas Engelbart, best known as the inventor of the computer mouse, and his idea of an **augmentation system**. Engelbart argued that human capability is enhanced through the interaction between a **tool system** and a **human system**.

Today, AI is rapidly advancing as a tool system. However, generative AI may no longer remain merely a tool. It is beginning to influence how we formulate questions, how we make judgments, how we communicate with others, and even how we imagine the future.

In this sense, AI may be entering the human system itself.

This raises an important challenge for knowledge science. The question is no longer only how to improve the capabilities of AI. We also need to ask how humans should think, learn, collaborate, and create knowledge together with AI.

As AI becomes more powerful, cultivating the human capacity to judge values, take responsibility, and orient knowledge toward desirable futures may become increasingly important.

That, I believe, is one of the central challenges for knowledge science in the age of generative AI.
