We held our research camp in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, on September 9-11, 2022.

Our camp is designed to understand theory through practice, and in particular, to think about what kind of service ecosystems exist in the region, using fieldwork and the photo-KJ method. Indeed, the important aim is to deepen mutual friendship.

On the first day, I explained the above aims and related theories, and doctoral students explained the method and examples of systematic literature review, the concept and examples of Gioia method, which is one of the grounded theory approaches, and the knowledge hiding method. Then, as students from both Shinagawa and Ishikawa gathered, they introduced each other and prepared for the next day's fieldwork.

The second day was fieldwork. In every year, Ishikawa students make up a theme for the fieldwork, and this time they chose the following themes: (1) Service ecosystem utilizing art in Joetsu City, (2) Service ecosystem surrounding a sake producer in Joetsu City, and (3) Service ecosystem aiming at local production for local consumption of local agricultural products.

We made appointments in advance, asked permission to interview the people involved, and through observation and experience at the sites, the members shared their knowledge with each other. This is the best part of the research camp.

On the third day, we will share the results. One of the key elements of a service ecosystem is to understand how the system or an array of systems are shared and stable, and what are the elements that support them. In this case, too, we saw that some nostalgic symbols were involved (as was the case with traditional industries in Okinawa), and we also saw the existence of systems with different characteristics while being formed under the umbrella of art and their sustainability (in the sense of maintaining their viability rather than their sustainability). The existence of orchestrators for sustainability (in the sense of maintaining viability rather than sustainability), and examples that have not reached the point of an ecosystem but have stayed in the service value chain (which is why we can approach the question of what an ecosystem is) were also highlighted.

It was a very powerful and fruitful camp, and I would like to express my respect for the efforts of the three doctoral students who prepared for it.
